Why do so many Americans distrust what they read in their newspapers? The American Society of Newspaper Editors is trying to answer this painful question. The organization is deep into a long self-analysis known as the journalism credibility project.
“为什么如此多的美国人不相信自己在报纸上所读到的东西？”首段首句为问句，就这种情况而言，问题通常是文章中心，阅读的目的是寻找问题的答案。painful question“令人苦恼的问题”；be deep into“深入进行”；self-analysis“自我分析”。
Sad to say, this project has turned out to be mostly low-level findings about factual errors and spelling and grammar mistakes, combined with lots of head-scratching puzzlement about what in the world those readers really want.
sad to say“不幸的是，遗憾地说”；turn out to be“结果是”；low-level findings“低水平的发现”；factual errors“事实型错误”；head-scratching“令人头痛的，令人挠头的”；in the world可以表示“到底”。本段表明作者对“新闻可信度调查项目”结果的否定。
But the sources of distrust go way deeper... In other words, there is a conventional story line in the newsroom culture that provides a backbone and a ready-made narrative structure for otherwise confusing news.
source“根源”；way相当于very；story line“情节”；backbone“支柱”；ready-made“现成的”；narrative“叙述的”；confusing“令人困惑的”。段首转折点明“有更深层次的根源”，然后指出新闻编辑的常规模式。
There exists a social and cultural disconnect between journalists and their readers, ... seem alien to many readers... plus one large metropolitan area. Then residents ... were phoned at random...
disconnect“脱节”；be alien to“与...相异”；plus介词“加上”；metropolitan“大都市的”；resident“居民”，动词形式reside“居住”；at random“随机”。段首句指出“新闻记者和读者之间存在社会和文化方面的脱节”，然后提到调查问卷，可以不用过于关注，其目的就是论证段首句。我们要把握的是论点，其他辅助说明的成分可以略过。
