Until that moment, ever since his return. Colonel Aureli-ano Buendía had not given himself the opportunity to see him with his heart. He was startled to see how much he had aged, how his hands shook, and the rather punctilious conformity with which he awaited death, and then he felt a great disgust with himself, which he mingled with the beginnings of pity.
自从回来直到现在，奥雷连诺上校都不让自己同情地望这个将军一眼。现在，他惊异地看见将军衰老的样儿、颤抖的双手以及等待死亡的顺从态度，他就对自己感到深刻的鄙视。但他把这种鄙视跟刚刚出现的怜悯混到了一起。
"You know better than I," he said, "that all courts--martial are farces and that you're really paying for the crimes of other people, because this time we're going to win the war at any price. Wouldn't you have done the same in my place?"

General , got up to clean his thick horn-rimmed glasses on his shirttail. "Probably," he said. "But what worries me is not your shooting me, because after all, for people like us it's a natural death." He laid his glasses on the bed and took off his watch and chain. "What worries me," he went on, "is that out of so much hatred for the military, out of fighting them so much and thinking about them so much, you've ended up as bad as they are. And no ideal in life is worth that much baseness." He took off his wedding ring and the medal of the Virgin of Help and put them alongside his glasses- and watch.
蒙卡达将军站起来，用衬衣下摆擦了擦很厚的玳瑁眼镜。“大概如此，”他说，“可我痛心的不是你打算枪毙我，国为归根到底，对于我们这样的人来说，这是一种自然死亡。”他把眼镜放在床上，取下手表和表链。“使我伤心的是，”他继续说，“你那么憎恨军阀，不断跟他们战斗，经常咒骂他们，结果你象他们一样坏。世界上任何理想都是不能为这种卑劣行为辩护的。”他摘下订婚戒指和救命女神像，把它们跟眼镜和手表放在一起。
"At this rate," he concluded, "you'll not only be the most despotic and bloody dictator in our history, but you'll shoot my dear friend úrsula in an attempt to pacify your conscience."
“如果这样继续下去，”他最后说，“你不但会成为我国历史上最专横暴戾的独裁者，而且会枪杀我敬爱的乌苏娜，那样你才安心。”
Colonel Aureli-ano Buendía stood there impassively. General then gave him the glasses, medal, watch, and ring and he changed his tone.
奥雷连诺上校无动于衷地站在那儿。于是，蒙卡达将军把眼镜、女神像、手表和戒指交给他，用另一种声调说：
"But I didn't send for you to scold you," he said. "I wanted to ask you the favor of sending these things to my wife."

Colonel Aureli-ano Buendía put them in his pockets.

"Is she still in Manaure?"

"She's still in Manaure," General Moncada confirmed, "in the same house behind the church where you sent the letter."
“还在马诺尔，”蒙卡达将军回答。“就在教堂后面那座房子里，你前次送信去的那个地方。”
"I'll be glad to, José Raquel," Colonel Aureli-ano Buendía said.
“我很高兴效劳，霍塞·拉凯尔，”奥雷连诺上校说。
When he went out into the blue air of the mist his face grew damp as on some other dawn in the past and only then did he realize that -he had ordered the sen-tence to be carried out in the courtyard and not at the cemetery wall. The firing squad, drawn up opposite the door, paid him the honors of a head of state.
当他走进街上浅蓝色的雾蔼里时，他的面孔一下子就湿润了，正象过去的那天黎明一样;这时，他才明白自己为什么下令在兵营院子里、而不在墓地墙边执行判决。站在房门对面的行刑队向他致敬， 犹如对待国家元首似的。
"They can bring him out now," he ordered.
“现在，你们可以把他押出来了，”他下了命令。
